You can always tell the foreigner in the photo - he's often the only one smiling. Anyone who has come face to face with poverty will tell you how wounded they become remembering the severity of it. Looking at this photo, taken in 2005, makes us realise how out of touch we were with poverty and what it does to families: it divides, it forces hard decisions, it implodes and it kills. How ironic that half of the world is dying from excess, and yet 30,000 people die each day because they are simply too poor to live. If only we could wave a magic wand and introduce these two groups. Well, we don't have a wand, but we have a will and a way.

Our PROJECT 200 initiative:

In partnership with local officials, we locate 200 of the poorest families we can find within a community. With a bias towards single mothers and widows, we match a child sponsor with each of the 200 children from these families generating a funding pool to address education options for the children and ensure basic medical services are available. We then work to help these women progress out of poverty.  PROJECT 200 is about bringing hope, value, empowerment and worth to single mothers and widows whose highest motivation is to secure a future for their children. Seeing their faces when they learn their child can go to school is incredible. Knowing real hope now exists for a family....priceless.
